What is floorball?

Floorball was introduced to Singapore around June 1995. The captivating aspects of the sport are its technical skills, speed and manoeuvers.
Floorball is a game that is not that much different from hockey, but is played indoors in a gymnasium. The rectangular court in which the game is played should be around 40m by 20m enclosed by boards with rounded corners.

The big difference in play is that the rules of Floorball do not allow for any high sticking, stick contact or body contact, so the game tends to be less physical in that sense. From an exertion point of view, it is no less physical and perhaps more.
It is a safer game, played with a stick made out of plastic or graphite with a curved and concave plastic blade. The shaft is shorter than a traditional hockey stick and round, which makes it very maneuverable. This design allows for a shot that is more of a whipping or flipping type of motion as opposed to a slapshot. The stick is not permitted to be above the waist on the back or forward stroke when taking a shot.

There is no puck or heavy ball, rather a light-weight plastic ball similar to a whiffle ball. The ball is extremely fast and can be easily lifted, bounced and deflected.
It is a combination of these rules and equipment that make this game so much fun and exciting.

Floorball is an indoors team sport played with plastic sticks where the aim is to put the light ball into the opposing team's goal. The game is most popular in Sweden, Finland and Switzerland, and is also played in several other countries, such as Norway and Czech Republic. It is gaining popularity in many other places as well, including some countries outside of Europe such as Singapore, Japan and Taiwan.
